Istanbul Blue Mosque

The elegant, slender minarets and gently sloping domed roof of the Blue Mosque graces Istanbul ’s skyline, captivating the onlooker. Just in front of the Hagia Sophia, it was meant to surpass the older mosque in size, but instead surpassed it in perfection and splendour. According to legend, the architect constructing the mosque had understood incorrectly the orders of Sultan Ahmet I. He had requested a minaret made of gold, “altin” in Turkish, but the architect understood “alti” which means six. However the originality of 6 minarets pleased the Sultan and saved the architect’s neck! Upon entering, the large courtyard includes ablution fountains to clean the face, arms, neck, feet, nose and mouth of worshippers. The entrance gate to the mosque is a typical Seljuk- Turkish wood work with a geometrical design very typical of early XI-XII century Turkish Art. In the interior, blue XVII century Iznik tiles gave it the name of the Blue Mosque. When you visit the Blue Mosque, remember that it is closed for 1-1.5 hours five times a day is prayer time: the first is early in the morning, second at noon time, third in afternoon, fourth in evening and last, before going to bed.
